Mboob
28 year old Yusupha Mboob - "The Gambian King of Mbalax"- was born and raised from
a family of griots in Banjul, the capital of the Gambia. He is the son of one of
the most famous and reputable traditional Gambian Wolof female singers Aji Chuch
Njie, who has travelled to all parts of the world showcasing her talents. He is
also a nephew to Pap Touray, the lead singer of the Ifang Bondi band, who were
well known for their unique singing style in the Senegambia region.
"I have been singing since I was 7 years old, my mum and my uncle inspired me to
sing Mbalax. I am therefore complimenting their efforts and trying to maintain the
family culture. I am also further inspired by the Senegalese Mbalax star Youssou
N’Dour, who we often listened to in the Gambia those days."
Yusupha is the first discovered Gambian Mbalax singer of the present generation who
has his own live band, the "DARAGI BAND – Serrekunda, London corner". He has
virtually performed across the length of the Gambia and had opened up shows for
several international artists. After the release of Yusupha's first album "DINGA
DEM" in 2003 he traveled to Vienna (Austria) where he still lives.
"I have been on a "self exile" because I felt I was not given the right support I
needed even though I was trying my best."
Since he travelled to Austria, he has been busy promoting his music in Europe. Base
on his outstanding talents, Yusupha was sponsored by some Austrian firends in 2004 to
release an album "SOLUTION" – a combination of Mbalax and modern Pop/Rock music.
Since the release of this album, his music has increased to spread all over
the world. He is presently working with Radio Afrika (Vienna) who often organize
shows for the African artists based in Vienna as well as producing a mix tapes for them.
Yusupha’s latest Mbalax tune "SETLU" is selected for release in this mix tape.
Yus: "Singing is my life!"
"What we have to do is to work hand in hand without rest. Because whatever one
person can do, together we can do it better." (Yusupha Mboob – "Setlu")
"I observe what you are doing to me, I observe what you are saying to me. It‘s not
good, but I forgive you, ‘cause I don‘t blame you for the way you think!" (Yusupha
Mboob – "Setlu")
