Cultural/Traditional Dances

Probably one of the smallest countries in Africa both in size and population, The Gambia can boast of a rich and diverse music culture owing to a multi ethnic and cultural society... More…

Ndey Nyang-Njie

The name Ndey Nyang may be new to many but not those who remember the one time very popular Karantaba Band, the Mandingo Band or the Musa Kalamula and the Gambian Band.

Ndey started her musical career in her early twenties with the Karantaba Band. She was with the group until she met with Ousu 'Lion' Njie also a very popular musician, who introduced her to Mandingo Band. After being with Mandingo for barely two years she was awarded a contract together with Musa Kalamula and the Gambian Band(a cultural music group) to travel to Europe to promote Gambia River Excursions. After spending six months she returned home to join Ousu 'Lion' Njie. The two got married in 1994 and formed their own musical band in 1995 touring the Gambia and Senegal.

After the tragic loss of her husband who passed away in 1998, Ndey Nyang-Njie has been rather quiet in the music scene only to release an album entitled 'Li ma Waar' in 2000, paying tribute to her missing hubby.
