Jaliba Kuyateh and the Kumareh band

Jaliba Kuyateh and his Kumareh Band combine both traditional and modern instruments and styles. His band has existed for more than 18 years. He has extensively toured Europe and America and is regarded today as the "Gambian Cultural Ambassador".Taught under the tutelage of his father from the age of five, Jaliba Kuyate is both a composer and a performer of calibre. A humble artist who has not been blinded by his fame, Jaliba has composed many songs conveying messages to the people on social issues. He has also rendered services for free of charge to build schools, religious and health centres in Gambia. Legend has it that his father, who was also a griot, used the Kora to punish the young Jaliba when he wronged by giving him a tune to play on the Kora before he was allowed to go out and play with friends.

A big name among contemporary African musicians, Jaliba has produced more than eight highly acclaimed CDs. He is regarded both by critics as well as fans as one of a rare gemstone within his genre.
