Cultural/Traditional Dances of The Gambia

The Gambia can boast of a rich and diverse music culture owing to a multi ethnic and cultural society. More…

Nancy Nanz aka Gambian Beyonce

Text Box:

When it comes to R&B music in The Gambia , the name Nancy rings a bell. He is the newest and the hottest R&B female musician in the country. Born in 1986, this young lady started music whiles going to school. With only one active year in the music scene, Nancy is already a household name in the Greater Banjul Area. In this interview with onegambia, she tells us about her life and music.

Music is not an easy career. Are you fit enough to stand the heat?

Yes I can because I believe that what ever a man can do a woman can do it.

But in the Gambia we have seen lot of women in the music who are extremely finding it difficult to progress.

I don't want to talk about other people, but I can say that my own music is here to stay. In my music I try to entertain different people. My target is not only The Gambia .

Why R&B and not something else?

It's the music that young people like. I do it in a Gambian style. For example my Baby Boy song belongs to Beyounce, but I change every thing to wollof. Anybody who can't speak English but understands wollof will know what Beyounce was talking about. I sing in both wollof and English.

Do you see any originality in your music?

Yeah I feel it, its original.

How do you develop your songs?

I write my own songs and sometimes I got some people who assist.

How were you identified by the Independent Electoral Commission to do a song for them on free and fair elections?

I was recommended by Sound City . I was part of their African Union Music Compilation, so they know what I can do.

Do you think you will be able to make enough money out of music in The Gambia ?

I am trying I will not give up and I will keep on trying.

Since you started singing, can you share with us some of your achievements?

I am still trying. Right now I am focus on developing myself and not trying to make achievements. I will not rush.

What do we expect from you in shortest possible time?

I am working on a new video. It will be a hot video, so Gambia watch out for it.

I am made to understand that there is too much jealousy amongst the young girls who are trying to make a head way in the music?

Jealousy is found every where. I am not scared, because once you are popular people start hating you. In my song I said “ I don't care what people say about me ….” For me I am interested in developing myself and not hating others.
