Cultural/Traditional Dances of The Gambia

The Gambia can boast of a rich and diverse music culture owing to a multi ethnic and cultural society. More…

interviews: Mass Lowe

Mass Lowe is also another renowned Gambian musician. He spends lot of his time performing in European countries. He is currently in The Gambia and according to him he has lot of things up his sleeves for Gambian showbiz. Together with his manager Alagie Darboe, they will be organizing what they called Destiny's Night Club Ambience, an every Friday nightly event kicking off on August 11 th and to run the whole summer.

Onegambia caught up with Mass Lowe to shed more light on this planned activities and few other things.

Tell us something about your summer package at Destiny's night club?

It's like bringing something new in Gambian showbiz. When people return from work be it in the office or where ever, they need to relax and this is what we are ready to offer them. Such type of ambience is needed in the country, to bring every one together under one roof. It promotes unity and understanding.

What new things are you talking about?

It's Mass Lowe and the Xam Xam band with new styles.

After the Destiny's Night Club ambience, what is next?

If the people respond overwhelming at Destiny's, we will also try to create something new. Every thing I am going to do will be at no other place apart from Destiny's. We need to advertise this night club, because it's the best in Africa .

You have been away for some time, what new things did you bring apart from the summer package?

Yes I have been away for some time, but it was for a genuine purpose. I have learnt a lot in the showbiz and I am sure I am going to utilize it properly, whiles in The Gambia.

In which outside countries have you performed so far?

So many! I have performed in Ghana , Ivory Coast , Senegal , Finland , Sweden , UK , America and many other places.

Many people said your music is very slow and sometimes very difficult to dance?

My music is always filled with ambience. Mbalax doesn't belong to any ethnic group, it's a Senegambian property. If you listen to Manding music, you feel the presence of mbalax. It's a music that's not slow, so I don't think they are right.

Many of those you started music with you have quitted, what is still keeping you in the music?

Music here is very painful and this is why many people end up running away. For me music is just part of me. Even when I am working in the street, I am thinking of what to compose or rehearsing a song in my mind. I wouldn't encourage any one to easily give up; music is not something that can make you rich automatically. The Gambia is small and this is why the music market is not lucrative.

In which area do you think The Gambian music industry need urgent attention?

Good studios and also encouraging the youth musicians to be able to play instruments. Not all of us have the voice to sing. If you love music it doesn't only mean that you should start singing. Let some of us sing and others specialize in instruments.
